About the Artist:
Karen is a painter from the Shetland Islands, Scotland, where she grew up just 100 meters from the sea. Her connection to wild nature and ever-changing coastal light has deeply influenced her work. She began drawing as a child and sold her first artworks to local tourists. Over 25 years ago, she became a professional artist, with her early career highlighted by participation in the Affordable Art Fair in London. A career milestone came when she presented a painting to HRH Prince Charles, who later wrote to say it now hangs in Clarence House.
Artistic Approach:
Karen’s work is defined by her vibrant use of colour and emotional intimacy. She works with a variety of media — including oils, acrylics, and mixed techniques — often experimenting with texture, light, and colour layering. Her still-life compositions and seascapes explore the beauty of ordinary moments, inviting the viewer into a meditative space where colour becomes emotion, memory, and discovery.
“Colour isn’t just something we see — it’s like a hidden gem waiting to be revealed. When I mix tones together and find that one perfect hue, it’s like opening a rock and finding crystals inside.” – Karen
